Strollers

Without strollers, it would be very difficult to take young children outside the home.  Sure, you can carry your baby.  New “baby backpacks” make this even easier.  But a stroller will allow you to take your baby anywhere no matter how tired you get, or how sore your back gets.

What to Look for in Strollers

There are now an enormous number of strollers representing a wide variety of features.  Your lifestyle and your baby’s lifestyle should determine what kind of stroller you should get.  The biggest tradeoff is between lightweight, cheap, and easily portable strollers, and sturdier strollers that generally offer more features (often a truly baffling array of futures), while being a little bit more of a drag to take places.

Note: many parents in fact buy two strollers: a lightweight one, and a more features-rich stroller.  The heavier stroller might be better for a day at one place—say, an amusement park or department store—while the lighter stroller is for when you’ll have to be taking it in and out of your car a lot—say, a day of shopping at a number of different stores.

Meanwhile, there is another category of stroller altogether: more rugged “jogging” strollers that, as their name implies, are suitable for heavier outdoor duty.

Considerations for Buying Strollers with Extra Features

If you decide to buy one of the bigger and better strollers, you’ve still only begun the shopping decision-making process.  Since strollers come in a bewildering variety of styles and with a vast array of features, you will be spoiled for choice.

If you have more than one child—or will be babysitting a child along with your own—you can definitely find strollers built for two, or even three.

If you’re buying a “jogging” stroller, you might want to check out extra safety options to keep your baby tucked into the stroller if the ride gets a little bumpy.  Special harnesses, especially five-point harnesses, are a good idea.

If making the stroller useful is more important than making it lightweight, you might also want too look at strollers that have storage compartments.

Tall?  There are strollers with adjustable height handles that might fit you better.
