After baby cribs, high chairs are probably baby furniture that will get the most use. Not only will you be using a high chairyou’re your child several times a day, you will be using it for a few years at least--possibly more if you have another child.
Wood High Chairs
Wood high chairs are the most traditional kind of high chair. The high chair that first pops into your mind is probably a wooden chair, not least in part because the high chair your parents used for you was most likely made of wood.
But despite the good looks and traditional charm of wooden high chairs, they are the least easy to use. They are the heaviest, stain much more easily, and are harder to clean. Plus, even though they look sturdier, they can still break and will not necessarily last longer than a plastic or metal high chair.
Finally, wooden high chairs will usually cost more than plastic or metal high chairs with the same features. If you see a plastic or metal high chair that is more expensive than your desired wooden model, that is probably because the plastic model has more features.
Metal, Plastic, and Combination Metal-Plastic High Chairs
High chairs made of metal and plastic range from extremely basic (but inexpensive) to full-featured baby dining centers. Look for reclining seats, padding, special coating to make seat padding easier to clean, removable trays (that are also easier to clean), wheels, and the ability to fold up.
You probably also want to buy a high chair that’s fairly light, since you will need to move it around and may need to take it with you when you make extended visits or go on vacation. For these kinds of uses, metal and plastic high chairs far outrank wooden ones.
