What issues should you consider when shopping for baby furniture?  As with all purchases, quality and value are the chief concerns.  But when buying anything for children, safety has to be a top concern.  This goes double for children's furniture, since it has the power to make your children's lives significantly better or worse.  Let's look at the issues in-depth.

Quality Baby Furniture

When considering the quality of baby furniture before you buy it, keep in mind two things: how much use/wear the furniture will get, and also how long you plan to keep it.  New parents frequently underestimate both, or simply don't consider them.

For instance, a cradle will get lots of wear, but it will only be used for a short time until the baby has to be moved to a crib.  This is a piece of furniture that does not need to be of extremely high quality since it will not last as long.  Cribs, however, often have to last at least two years.  If you have more than one child, the crib will have to last even longer.  Meanwhile, you can even get cribs that convert to an infant bed and eventually a child's bed as the child grows older.  For such a piece of furniture, quality, and especially durability, are extremely important and are worth paying for.

Baby Furniture Value

You will be spending a lot of money on your baby, starting with pregnancy.  Spending a ton of money on the furniture is probably not one of your priorities.  Still, if you have to buy a piece of furniture twice, it wasn't much of a value.  Nor will it be a value if you have to buy accessoires separately to make it work properly.  If you will be using a crib outside, for instance, you want a crib with a canopy to protect against the sun.  Naturally, features like this cost more, but a cheaper piece of baby furniture that does not have such an important feature is hardly a value.

Baby Furniture Safety

When buying baby furniture, safety should be a paramount concern.  Always check that the product has not been recalled and register it after you have bought it, even if the piece of furniture is used.  Look for furniture that will not let your child fall out easily, catch tiny fingers or toes in moving parts, or otherwise put him or her in danger.  There should be a safety certification from a government agency or independent agency, and not just the manufacturer's guarantee.
