Even though most babies would be happy to be dressed in nothing but a diaper and a smile, few new parents are at a shortage of baby clothes. When new parents have a baby shower, they may not always get the baby bedding, diapers, or other practical things they will badly need. But they are virtually guaranteed to get at least a few miniature sailor suits or dresses and teeny tiny sneakers and loafers that were a lot of fun to pick out and show off to everyone else at the baby shower, even if they will never fit the child, or the parents’ taste, for that matter. When it comes to baby gifts, it often really is more fun to give than receive.
That’s why so many parents-to-be are starting to use gift registries at stores, much like the gift registries used for weddings. Who knows, that cute little sailor suit might actually be on the list. But somehow that doesn’t seem likely. Having a baby has never been more expensive, and new parents are keenly aware of the distinction between needs and wants. Any baby clothes on the gift registry just might include a few pairs of socks or something about as practical.
What if there’s no gift registry? Should you take this as a license to buy baby clothes? Or should you be proud that the new parents have respected your judgment and act accordingly by giving them a gift they’re sure to need and want? How can you even know what size clothing to get a baby who hasn’t even been born yet? And what are new parents supposed to think when they boy’s or girl’s clothing when the baby’s sex hasn’t even been announced yet?
You can always just include the receipt with the gift, so they can bring it back if it turns out not to be a welcome gift. Right? Wrong! How many people would feel comfortable bringing back a gift, no matter how much they hated it? Plus, can you be that sure of the store’s return policy? When you give clothing, and especially when you give baby clothes, you risk giving the gift of resentment when the parents are stuck with something they don’t want and don’t feel comfortable giving back.
If you want to give new parents the gift of baby clothes, the most appropriate way might be with a gift certificate. Remember, the gift is supposed to bring as much happiness to the recipient as much as the giver.
